Wilton Schools Considering Changes To 2013-14 Calendar

WILTON, Conn. – The February school break many Wilton families enjoy may not happen next year if the Wilton Board of Education enacts revisions to the 2013-14 school calendar.

The Wilton Board of Education is weighing possible changes to the 2013-14 calendar that would take away much of the February vacation break.

A proposed change to the school calendar is on the agenda for a school board budget workshop, scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilton High School Library.

The proposed calendar adjustment, first discussed by the school board in December, would not include a full week off for the week of Presidents Day (Feb. 17-21, 2014). The April vacation, scheduled for April 14-18, is included. The school year would begin Aug. 26, 2013 and conclude June 10, 2014.

Wilton Schools Superintendent Gary Richards said the changes are being considered to offer more flexibility for inclement weather. The district has had to amend the calendar the last two school years because of Hurricane Irene in August 2011, a freak snowstorm in October 2011 and Hurricane Sandy last November.

“For two years in a row, we've had major storms that have necessitated changes,” he said. “It’s played havoc with the entire calendar.”

Richards said he’s heard from parents who agree with the possible revision and others who don’t like it. The superintendent said he’s not sure if the school board will vote on it Wednesday or wait until February to take action.
