Wilton Schools Trim February Break To Make Up Days

WILTON, Conn. – February break for Wilton public school students will be cut by three days, as the Wilton Board of Education amended the 2012-13 school calendar to make up for days lost to Hurricane Sandy.

Wilton High School and other Wilton schools will be in session Feb. 20-22 to make up for class days lost to Hurricane Sandy.

The school board voted Tuesday to approve a plan recommended by administrators that will make Feb. 20 to 22 school days, turning the Presidents Week break into a four-day weekend. The rescheduling will also make Feb. 4, originally a day off, into a half-day of school, with the afternoon being used for professional staff development.

The school year will be lengthened by two days, and the final day of the year will be June 18. The school year could be pushed back to as late as June 21 if more weather days are needed. The district could also take one day off its planned 181-day calendar to the state minimum of 180 days. The planned April vacation would be shortened only if more than five snow days need to be made up.

The board reviewed three options to make up the six days lost after Hurricane Sandy knocked out power to much of the town and made roads impassable for more than a week.

Wilton Superintendent Gary Richards said the rescheduling gives the district some flexibility in case more days are needed for snow or other inclement weather. It also gives students needed class time in advance of state exams, he said.

Richards said he knew that some families that already had made plans for the February week off may not agree with the change.

“A lot of people approach it from their frame of reference and what their family’s needs are,” he said. “You’re always going to get different views on calendars.”
