The program provides opera training, and hundreds of singers from around the world auditioned to be a CoOPERAtive Fellow.
The program is presented by opera professionals, and is designed to help young singers prepare for advancement in the field of singing, or to attend a summer apprentice program. Each singer’s strengths are assessed by the staff, and they receive focus as individuals to develop and nurture their talents and improvements upon their skills.
CoOPERAtive is a three-week program, and it includes coaching in the areas of style, techniques, dramatic presentation, language, diction and body awareness, and also with advice on developing a resume and how to properly fill out applications.
Kempson was able to participate in private coaching sessions, classes and master classes with leading conductors, pianists and stage directors.
Laura Brooks Rice and Christopher Ameson, Westminster Choir College faculty members, serve as the program’s directors. Among the CoOPERAtive graduates are Metropolitan Opera National Council’s National Auditions finalists and singers who now work with opera companies all over the U.S.
“This isn’t a recreational program,” Sheri Greenawald of San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program said. “This is the real deal, where students will work hard and grow toward their goal, under the guidance of professionals who care.”
