Thomas finished the race, which some triathletes say is the most difficult in the world, in 7 hours, 20 minutes and 19 seconds.

The race consists of a five-mile run, 84-mile bike ride and 15-mile run in the Catskill Mountains. What makes the course challenging is the hills. The three-loop cycling course includes more than 8,400 feet of elevation gain.

Thomas won by more than 17 minutes. He had the fastest splits in each run leg, and posted the second fastest bike split.

Thomas is one of the nation's top age group triathletes. He is the owner of Personal Training Professionals in Southport.
