Fatima Falcons Kick Off Tourney With a Win

Our Lady of Fatima School was not very a good host as its junior varsity girls team kicked off the fourth annual Tyler Ugolyn Memorial Basketball Tournament Friday night crushing St. Ann’s, 33-14.

The Falcons led 10-4 by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. While head coach Chris Emmanuel was pleased with the win, that was not the most important thing.

“Winning is secondary to the girls having fun and developing,” Emmanuel said afterward.

Helping secure the victory for the Falcons were Elle Fair and Maria Bonaddio. In addition to running the offense, Fair had many key steals, stymieing any attempt at a comeback by St. Ann’s. Bonaddio played down low, grabbing many rebounds, and was able to put back a few offensive boards for second chance points.

Tyler Ugolyn graduated from Our Lady of Fatima in 1992 and died during the tragic events of Sept. 11. Ugolyn was a basketball player while at Our Lady of Fatima and went on to play at Columbia University.

This year’s tourney includes nearly 500 players representing 42 teams from 13 Catholic Schools throughout Fairfield County. There are six divisions ranging from boys and girls junior varsity to girls and boys varsity.

The tournament was scheduled to tip-off on Thursday, but  postponed to Friday because of the snowstorm.
