With the victory, UConn's senior players are the first in NCAA history to win a championship in every season of their college careers.

As a freshman, UConn forward Breanna Stewart predicted that she and her fellow Huskies would win four consecutive national titles in a row. And that proved to be true for Stewart and fellow seniors Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck.

This was the 11th national title since 1995 for UConn and for coach Geno Auriemma, who passed famed UCLA men's coach John Wooden for most wins overall in the NCAA.

It was the sixth undefeated season in their history and an unprecedented fourthe undefeated seasons in a row.

As fans across the Nutmeg State cheered, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy joined in the celebration.

“The Huskies have dominated women’s basketball this entire season. What the remarkable women on this team have done is nothing short of extraordinary," he said in a statement.

" I congratulate the entire team on bringing an eleventh NCAA championship title back home to Connecticut. Coach Auriemma has once again done a remarkable job, and he will go down in history as one of the greats.

"UConn has once again reminded the entire nation why Connecticut continues to be the official home of college basketball. This is an extraordinary moment for our state to celebrate.”
