Moss Sets 2 Records Pacing Wilton to Swim Crown

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton swimmer K.C. Moss set meet records in two individual events and the Warriors won their second straight team title and third in four years Tuesday night at Southern Connecticut State University.

Wilton compiled 754 points to easily outdistance Branford, which had 602. The Warriors swept the relays, and Stephanie Moriarty and Kristen Moss tied for first place in the 100 backstroke. Katie Warburg won the diving for Wilton’s other individual win.

Stanford University-bound K.C. Moss was Wilton’s leader. She won the 200 individual medley in 2:05:27, more than seven seconds ahead of runner-up Kaitlin Murtha of New Fairfield. She also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02:53, leading runner-up Corinna Nickerson by almost six seconds. Warburg won the diving by 14 points, and Moriarty and Kristen Moss swam 58:48 to tie for first in the 100 backstroke.

Wilton set the tone for the meet in the opening race. Moriarty, K.C. Moss, Caroline O’Brien and Kristen Moss cruised home with a win by more than two seconds in the opening 200-yard medley relay.

Freshman Maggie Kauffeld finished sixth in the next event, the 200 freestyle, and the Warriors went on to finish in the top eight in each event. Even more worrisome for the Warriors’ opponents is that Wilton’s lineup is loaded with underclassmen. K.C. Moss may have been Tuesday’s star, but more than a few girls are ready to take center stage for her when she departs next year.

Wilton won the 200 free relay with K.C. Moss, Grace Hendee, Caroline O’Brien and Morgan Scarth. Hendee, Scarth, Moriarty and Kristen Moss won the 400 free relay. K.C. Moss and Scarth are the only seniors among those relays.

Other top eight performers for Wilton included Julie Lewis (sixth, 200 IM); Hendee, (third, 50 free; fourth, 100 free); O’Brien (seventh, 50 free; second 100 butterfly); Kady Holland (fifth, diving);  Kristen Moss (fifth, 100 free); Kauffeld (second, 500 free); and Lindsay Cooney (fifth, 100 breast). Among that group, Holland is the only senior.

Complete results are available online . Wilton will compete Saturday in the State Open at Yale.
