Wilton Girls Lacrosse Falls in Ciac Class M Championship

STRATFORD, Conn. – Olivia Hompe was the Lebron James of girls lacrosse in the CIAC Class M championship game Saturday at Bunnell High School, scoring 9 goals for New Canaan, which romped to the title with a 17-9 win over Wilton.

Hompe almost outscored Wilton by herself and she also had an assist. She passed the ball to teammates and took off for the goal with a returned pass, scoring repeatedly.

“Defensively, we didn’t have enough confidence to pull it off,” Wilton’s coach Meredith Adamicki said. “We were lacking the chemistry on the defensive end and lost a little bit of steam.” She said the team didn’t face guard Hompe or try any other special strategy to stop her.

Wilton had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 early with New Canaan taking its first lead with 11:04 left in the first half.

“We needed to get the jitters out,” Rams coach Kristin Woods said. “We were nervous to start but as the game came on we came into our own. We always wanted to put the full 50 minutes together and that’s what we were able to do today.”

Hompe was modest about her accomplishment, crediting the defense for the victory. “Our defense is the strongest part of our team,” she said. “We stepped it up with huge saves in the net.”

Senior Sarah Mannelly scored four goals for the Rams. The Warriors were led by junior Casey Pearsall with four goals and sophomore Shannon Quinlan with three.

New Canaan defeated Wilton 13-10 in a regular season game and came into the championship game ranked first in the division with a 19-1 record, its only loss coming in a Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament game.

The Rams defeated Daniel Hand, Darien and New Fairfield in the Class M tournament to reach the final game.

Wilton was ranked third with a 16-3 record and defeated Berlin, Joel Barlow and East Lyme to advance to the championship.
