Fall Short vs. Fairfield

Wilton's seventh-grade girls basketball team seemed to be cruising toward its first victory Sunday in a Fairfield County Basketball League game against Fairfield. An untimely dry spell in the fourth quarter cost the team, however, as Fairfield closed the game with a 13-0 run to pull out a 34-24 victory.

"I think we got tired toward the end,'' said coach Ken Seegers, who is also an assistant on the girls high school team. "We're throwing a lot at them at this point in the season. We never talked with them about winning games now. Our goal is to be ready to play well in March."

Rachel Gordon, Christine Holmgren, Claire Graham and Sarah Fitzgerald scored four points apiece for Wilton. The girls built an 8-2 lead after one quarter, and were up 15-10 at halftime and 22-17 after three quarters. Holmgren, Wilton's tallest player, fouled out with 6:21 remaining, and Fairfield's tallest girl, Ashley Cotto, took over on both ends of the floor. Cotto scored nine of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to fuel Fairfield's comeback.

Wilton dropped 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the FCBL. The team has games this weekend against Shelton and the Fairfield PAL Mercury.

"These girls have an unseen amount of upside,'' coach Ken Seegers said. "We're learning, and that's what it's about at this level."
