Wilton 7th Grade Girls Slip in Tough Weekend

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton seventh-grade girls, sponsored by Wilton Bank, suffered two big losses this weekend to Bethel and Norwalk. The girls fell to Bethel, 44-25, and to Norwalk, 44-21.

Wilton, playing without injured center Marissa Pucci, looked to its backcourt to lead the scoring charge. Guards Hayley Meyer (nine points), Elizabeth Healy (nine points), Margaret Smith (three points), Ellie Armstrong (two points), and Melanie Turza answered the call by combining for 23 of Wilton’s 25 points. They also nabbed eight steals in Saturday’s loss.

Caylin Cannovino rounded out the scoring for Wilton, which kept the score close through three quarters with Ava Martinelli, Nina Mellin and Mackenzie Holmgren playing strong inside the paint. But Bethel’s hot shooting from anywhere inside the arc took away any advantage Wilton inside players had against the smaller Bethel team.

In the second game on Sunday, Wilton faced the best competition it has seen this season. Norwalk used its inside and speed at the guard position to hand Wilton a tough loss.

Hayley Meyer continued with her hot hand from the outside, scoring 11 points. Meyer also nailed two 3-pointers. Inside, Wilton’s Cannavino (five points) and Martinelli (two points) did their best, battling one the best centers in the seventh grade and keeping the game from getting out of hand. Margaret Smith scored the other three points for Wilton by driving hard to the hoop and drawing numerous fouls.

The Wilton seventh-grade girls (9-6) take on Newtown and Brookfield this weekend.
