Wilton Boys Basketball Team Holds Off Stamford

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton High School’s boys basketball team hit clutch free throws down the stretch and came up with a huge stop in the final seconds to defeat Stamford, 66-63, in a Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Max Maudsley scored 21 points to lead the Warriors, who improved to 6-5 overall and 4-5 in the conference. It was Wilton’s third win in four games. Stamford fell to 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the league.

The score was tied at 57-57 when Stamford was whistled for a foul with 2:07 remaining in the game. A technical foul also was assessed when a Stamford player complained about the foul. Maudsley converted three free throws to give Wilton the lead for good.

Maudsley, Eric Houska and Matt Shifrin hit two free throws apiece in the final minute to help Wilton hold on. Stamford had possession with 7.7 seconds left after Shifrin hit two free throws, but the Black Knights could not get a good look at the basket for a potential game-tying shot.

Houska added 17 for Wilton, and Weston Wilbur had 14.

Wilton built a 44-37 advantage with 3:11 left in the third quarter for its largest lead. The Warriors led 57-51 after a basket by Houska with 3:30 remaining. Stamford scored six straight points to tie the game at 57-57 on two free throws by Kenny Wright with 2:22 remaining. Wilton took the lead on its next possession and was never headed.

The Warriors entered the game tied for 12th in the race for one of the eight league playoff berths. The Warriors visit Norwalk on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip.
