Wilton Boys Soccer Grabs Another Big Victory

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton High boys soccer team has taken on the role of “giant killer” as of late, riding a wild second half to a 3-1 victory over previously unbeaten New Canaan.

The victory marked the second time in three games the Warriors handed an undefeated team its first loss of the season. Wilton topped previously unbeaten Norwalk last Wednesday.

“We’re excited to be in the position we are. This is the best start Wilton has had through 10 games since 1995,” Warriors head coach Jim Lewicki said. “The kids are hitting on all cylinders. The resiliency of this team is unbelievable.”

After Wilton and New Canaan battled to a scoreless clean sheet in the first half, the floodgates opened for a wild, four-goal second period.

Wilton’s Kyle Dedrick opened the game’s scoring just two minutes into the second half off of a short cross pass in the box from teammate David Brown. The score held at 1-0 for the next 33 minutes until New Canaan equalized on a Rob Valente header, assisted by Valente’s older brother, Steven.

The two teams each had chances to score the go-ahead goal, but it came down to a case of being in the right place at the right time to determine the winner.

John “Mac” McReynolds somehow got a foot on the ball during a huge scrum in front of the net with less than five minute to play. The ball trickled through the crowd and into the net for the deciding goal.

Brown blasted an insurance goal past the New Canaan keeper two-and-a-half minutes later to secure the victory.

“We’re just focusing on one game at a time. Coach has a saying, ‘one-and-oh we go,’” McReynolds said. “It definitely feels good to win this one. We just stayed patient and kept fighting and eventually got the ball in the net.”

Wilton (8-1-1) has won four in a row and now sits just one point behind New Canaan for second place in the conference. The Warriors also trail top-ranked Norwalk by only two points.

Wilton kicks off a five-game home stand on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. when Westhill comes to town.
