WILTON, Conn. – Wilton’s Amy Bevilacqua won the General Classification division of the Green Mountain Stage Race over the weekend in the Mad River Valley section of Vermont.
The race is the largest Pro-Am Stage race east of the Mississippi, according to the race website, and features the top cyclists from the United States and Canada.
Bevilacqua finished in 6:31:48, finishing 24 seconds ahead of runner-up Lex Albrecht. Beth Rui finished third, 4:35 behind Bevilacqua.
The turning point came on the 67-mile third stage of the race. The grueling, hilly course in the “App Gap” proved pivotal as Bevilacqua won by more than a minute. She was also tied for first in the first stage of the race. With the lead after the third stage, Bevilacqua raced cautiously during the fourth and final stage, a 25-lap criterium in Burlington, to hold on for the win.
Bevilacqua won Category 3/4 last year at the race. She won the New York City Triathlon in 2012, and finished second in the race this summer.
