Wilton Falls to Darien in Girls Lacrosse Thriller

WILTON, Conn. - The Darien and Wilton High girls lacrosse teams keep adding to the string of classics that occur every time the two face off. But for the first time in two years, Wilton came up short, going down to defeat 8-7.

Wilton erased a three-goal halftime deficit, but never led in the hotly contested matchup. The Warriors tied it up at 6-6 with 14:15 remaining, but Darien’s Emily Stein put the Blue Wave ahead for good after picking up a loose ball deep in the Wilton zone.

“It always comes down to the wire with these two teams,” Wilton head coach Meredith Meyran said. “We just tried to come into the game with our best game plan and execute. I was really proud of the way we played them despite the outcome.”

Wilton had possession for the final two minutes of the game, but the Darien defense clamped down. Tegan Helms, the hero of last year’s unforgettable double-overtime game , took a shot with 36 seconds left. The desperation chance was blocked in front of the net, however, and Darien scooped up the loose ball to secure the victory.

Helms had tied the game at 6-6 on an acrobatic diving shot, but the Warriors could not take a lead. Darien goalie Caylee Waters came up with eight saves against Wilton. The Warriors’ keeper, Vanessa Pagano, also provided some highlight reel stops, saving 10 Darien shots.

Helms and Meagan Boepple each scored twice. Casey Pearsall, Shannon Quinlan and Maddie McClintock also had goals for the Warriors.

“We’ll definitely see Darien again,” Meyran said. “We just came up a little short against a really good team.”

It was the second tough loss in a row for Wilton, which drops to 7-2 on the year. Wilton takes on Brien McMahon on Monday at 4 p.m.
