Wilton Girls Soccer Gets Back On Track With Win

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton High girls soccer team snapped its four game winless streak Tuesday in convincing fashion against rival Ridgefield.

Wilton thrived in the pouring rain, as four Warriors found the net in a 5-1 rout as Jayne Maccio netted a pair of goals. It was a much-needed win for a Wilton squad that has scuffled over the past two weeks, going 0-2-2 since winning it first two contests.

“We worked really hard today. Losing to New Canaan made us want to win,” Maccio said. “We really focused on shooting today, and it was outstanding.”

Maccio put the Warriors on the board less than 10 minutes into the match, but Ridgefield responded with a goal by Sarah Battapoglia. With the first half winding down, it looked as if Wilton might be in for a fifth straight tough game.

But Wilton caught the momentum-changing break it desperately needed. After Ridgefield was called for a hand ball, Tegan Helms took a direct kick from just 15 yards away. Her shot went to the far post, where Mackenzie Dean was positioned perfectly to head in the eventual game-winning goal.

“We just haven’t been scoring and today we turned it around. It felt good,” Dean said. “We have a lot of faith in each other, and we break down every time we tie or lose to teams we know we can beat. This win is huge for us.”

Dean’s goal opened the floodgates, awakening an offense that outscored its opponents 7-1 in its first two games.

Casey Pearsall fired a rocket past the Ridgefield goalie midway through the second half, giving Wilton some breathing room. Less than a minute later, Maccio put the game out of reach. Kayla O’Brien rounded out the Wilton scoring with a nice cross shot with five minutes to play.

Wilton (3-2-2) will try to build on the momentum when it travels to Danbury on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. game.
