Wilton High Girls Basketball Team Rolls To State Title

WILTON, Conn. -- Sparked by senior Erin Cunningham, Wilton High School's girls basketball team opened the game with a 14-3 run and cruised past South Windsor, 73-45, to win the Class LL championship Saturday night at Mohegan Sun.

Cunningham scored 33 points to pace the Warriors to their first girls basketball state title. The second-seeded Warriors finish the season 24-1. Top-seeded Windsor also finished 24-1.

Cunningham came out on fire. She scored 10 points in the first 3:04, including two 3-pointers, as the Warriors raced out to a 14-3 lead and South Windsor never recovered.

Wilton led 45-25 at halftime, and 61-34 entering the final period. Cunningham also added 19 rebounds to close out her senior year with a performance to remember.

So, too, did classmate Erika Meyer. The Providence-bound center scored 17 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out six assists.

Makenna Pearsall added 10 points for the Warriors, whose only blemish this season came in a loss to Ridgefield in the semifinals of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship.

Wilton beat No. 3 Mercy, 55-54, in the semifinals to earn a berth in the championship game. The Warriors also beat Newington, Cheshire and Stamford in their path to the championship.

Wilton's roster is Erica Meyer, Erin Cunningham, Karen Brosko, Sarah Fitzgerald, Haley English, Makenna Pearsall, Caraline Higgins, Caylin Cannavino, Claire Gulbin, Christina Holmgren, Lauren Robertson, Hannah Maatallah, Hana Previte and Emily Tuin.
