McDougal, athletic director at Brookfield High School, will start in his new role July 1. Hayes is retiring effective June 30 after 10 years of service, according to Superintendent Gary Richards.

“Mr. McDougal’s experience has shown him to be a person of strong character who has served as an excellent role model for student athletes and coaches,” Richards said at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting. “He possesses a strong work ethic and has a track record of dedication to his student athletes, coaches and athletics program.”

McDougal, Richards said, “emerged as the clear finalist” in the search for a new athletic director. The search process included a first round of interviews with a panel made up of student athletes, coaches, the secretary of the athletics department, booster club presidents, teachers and administrators, Richards said.

Those who made it past the first round were interviewed a second time and then finally by members of the district’s central office cabinet.

McDougal is an experienced athletic director who is knowledgeable on the policies and guidelines of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference and who has extensive experience hiring, evaluating and developing coaches, Richards said.

Under McDougal’s leadership, Brookfield High School has seen an increase in athletic participation, and the school was awarded the Michaels Cup over the past three years for the quality of its athletic program, Richards said.

“We have learned from a variety of sources that Mr. McDougal is deeply dedicated to student athletes and is very clear about the importance of emphasizing academics as the primary focus in students’ school experience,” Richards said.

“We are very excited about Mr. McDougal’s appointment and look forward to working with him when he assumes his new position on July 1.”
