Wilton Rower Helps Virginia To Third Place Finish In NCAAs

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Five women from Fairfield County helped the University of California rowing team win its third national championship last weekend.

Weston’s Sarah Schwartz rowed on Cal’s second varsity eight, which won its race at the NCAA regatta. Norwalk’s Olivia Clark and Darien’s Juliet Ruhe, Katie DeHaas and Kendra Shutts also competed for the Golden Bears.

California won its first title in nine years. Schwartz, a senior who rowed for Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club, held the one seat on the second varsity eight.

Clark, a freshman, competed with Norwalk River Rowing before joining the Golden Bears. Ruhe, Shutts and DeHaas were all members of the Connecticut Boat Club.

Jo Gurman of Weston helped Virginia to a third place finish. The former CBC rower saw in the bow seat for UVA’s Varsity 4, which finished third in its race. The Cavaliers finished third as a team behind Cal and Ohio State. Wilton’s Mary Beth Greer and Greenwich’s Alex Slabbert also row for the Cavaliers.
