Wilton Wahoo Boys Swim To YMCA National Title

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton Wahoos boys swim team won the National YMCA Short Course swimming championship last weekend in Greensboro, N.C.

The Wahoos finished with 402.5 points to lead the 55-team field. Wilton’s girls finished eighth out of 47 teams. In combined scoring, the Wahoos finished fourth.

Eric Ronda’s win in the 200-yard breaststroke led the way for Wilton. He was also third in the 100 breaststroke.

Sean Higgins broke a 19-year-old team record to finish sixth in the 200 butterfly. He was 12th in the 400 individual medley, and 13th in the 1000 free. Stephen Holmquist was seventh in the 400 IM  and the 500 free and 19th in the 500 and 1,000 free.

Tommy Kealy was 20th in the 50 free and 100 fly and 24th in the 100 free. He helped the 200- and 400-medley relays break team records. Nathaniel Boley, Ronda and Max Dolan joined him on the relays. The 800-free relay of Dolan, Ian Rainey, Cole and Ronda set a Connecticut resident record, obliterating a mark that had stood since 1989 by more than 13 seconds.

Ian Rainey was fourth in the 400 IM, seventh in the 200 back and eigthin the 200 fly.   Matt Moen placed fourth  in the 100 free and the 1650 free, eighth in the 500 free and 10th in the 400 IM. Boley was fourth in the 200 back and seventh in the 100 back, while Dolan was third in the 400 IM and 10th in the 200 IM.

Matt Moen added a fourth in the 1,000 free. He was eighth in the 500 free. Jordan Berger added a sixth in the 200 breaststroke. Sam Delise scored points by placing 16th in both the 200 breast and the 200 IM.

Boley was fourth in the 200 back and seventh in the 100 back, while Dolan was third in the 400 IM and 10th in the 200 IM. Matt Moen added a fourth in the 1,000 free. He was eighth in the 500 free. Jordan Berger added a sixth in the 200 breaststroke.

For the girls, Maddie Smart broke a 17-year-old Wahoo record with an eighth-place finish in the 1,000 free. Verity Abel was fifth in the 1,650 free, seventh in the 100 free, 10th in the 500 free and 14th in the 200 free. Verity Abel was fifth in the 1650 free, seventh in the 100 free, 10th in the 500 free and 14th in the 200 free.  Alyssa Sotrino was seventh in the 200 breaststroke and 12th in the 100 breaststroke.  Olivia Clark scored points in the 200 breast when she came in 16th place.

Bobby McDowell, Grace Hendee, Caroline O'Brien,  Stephanie Moriarty, Maggie Kauffeld Courney Gilroy, Brandon Cole, Kiersten Daly, Sherman Lau, Ky-Lee Perry, Cody Bond, Samantha Cheruk, and Jourdan Stewart also swam for the Wahoos.
