Wilton Wahoos Sweep Top Honors At State Swimming Championships

WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton Y Wahoos traveled to Wesleyan University from March 6 to March 9 to compete in the Connecticut Senior Open Championships and took top honors in the men's, women's and combined team categories, with a total of 1,525 points.

Over the four-day meet, many records were broken and numerous cut times were achieved. Max Dolan, of Southbury, was the male high point winner and Ian Rainey, of Westport, was the male distance high point winner.

The women's 800-yard freestyle relay broke the CT State Record with a time of 7:36.13. The members of that relay were Verity Abel (Westport), Emma Holmquist (Wilton), Samantha Cheruk (Stamford) and Ky-lee Perry (Norwalk). The previous record of 7:36.50 was set in 1997.

The men's 800-yard freestyle relay also broke the CT State Record with a time of 6:55.17, breaking the record set in 1975 of 6:57.49. Members of that relay were Stephen Holmquist (Wilton), Ed Stolarski (Weston), Max Dolan and Ian Rainey.

In addition, two Wahoo team records were broken. Verity Abel, of Westport, broke the 400-yard IM record with a time of 4:18.34. Janel Jorgensen, a 1988 Olympian, set the previous record of 4:18.79. Max Dolan set a new record of 49.72 in the 100-yard butterfly, breaking the old record of 49.83 set in 1994.

Stephen Holmquist, of Wilton, set a new Wesleyan pool record in the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:54.75, breaking the old record of 3:57.19.

Winter Junior National time cuts were reached by Stephen Holmquist in the 1000-yard freestyle, 400-yard IM, 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke and by Tommy Kealy in the 200-yard butterfly.

New YMCA National cuts were made by Emma Kauffeld in the 200-yard and 1000-yard freestyle, Robby Giller in the 500-yard, 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard IM, Brooke Hendee in the 100-yard breaststroke and Stephen Holmquist in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yeard backstroke.

In total, 22 swimmers from Wilton competed in the meet.  In the women's division, those that finished in the top 27 included Courtney Gilroy placing 12th in the 400-yard IM and 15th in the 200-yard IM; Brooke Hendee placing 18th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 27th in the 200-yard IM; Emma Holmquist finishing second in the 200-yard breaststroke, seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, eighth in the 400-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle, tenth in the 100-yard freestyle, 11th in the 200-yard IM and 13th in the 1000-yard freestyle; Emma Kauffeld placing seventh in the 1000-yard freestyle, eighth in the 200-yard freestyle and 12th in the 1650-yard freestyle; Stephanie Moriarty finishing ninth in the 100-yard backstroke and 26th in the 200-yard backstroke; and, Katrina Trentos placing 27th in the 500-yard freestyle.  Other women competing in the meet were Hannah Armstrong, Julia Lewis, NoraNoel Nolan and Madeline Srivastava.

In the men's division, Robby Giller placed fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle, eighth in the 1000-yard freestyle, 12th in the 500-yard freestyle and 18th in the 200-yard and 400-yard IM; Stephen Holmquist finished first in the 400-yard IM, second in the 500-yard freestyle, third in the 1000-yard freestyle, fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM, fifth in the 200-yard backstroke and 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke; Tommy Kealy placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, third in the 100-yard butterfly, fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, tenth in the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle and 19th in the 200-yard IM; and Bobby McDowell finished tenth in the 100-yard backstroke, 13th in the 200-yard backstroke, 14th in the 100-yard butterfly and 27th in the 200-yard butterfly.  Other Wilton men that participated were Jack Abbott, Callum Breene, Jake Kealy, Nick Killian, Trevor Kratz, Jack Lewis, Ryan Robb and Kyle Wilson.
