Wilton Woman Rides To Cycling Victory In Vermont

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton’s Amy Bevilicqua won her division last weekend in the Green Mountain Stage Race in Vermont. The cycling event is the largest road stage race for professional and amateur cyclists east of the Mississippi River, according to the race website.

Bevilicqua won Category 3/4 of the race, which consisted of four stages. In the first stage, a hilly 6-mile time trial, Bevilicqua took a commanding lead of one minute and two seconds. In 70-mile Stage III, Bevilicqua finished first in her division and led by more than four minutes heading into the final stage.

The final stage was supposed to be an easy riding day, but two crashes nearly cost Bevilicqua the opportunity to finish the race. She avoided the dangerous crashes and won the overall race in 5:49:52, six minutes ahead of Julie Marceau. Bevilicqua wore the colors of Targetraining, and Targetraining teammate Kristin Budden finished fourth in the same race, 11:12 behind Bevilicqua. There were 31 cyclists in Bevilicqua’s division.

Bevilicqua’s victory moved her into Category II for 2013, where she will have to compete against tougher competition. Bevilicqua also won the New York City Triathlon in July.
