Wilton's Defense Falters In Loss To Ridgefield In Football

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton High’s football team did not have any solution for stopping a high-flying Ridgefield team in Friday’s 49-14 loss to the Tigers.

“They were running hard, and we weren’t tackling hard,’’ coach Bruce Cunningham said. “That’s a bad combination.”

Ridgefield (3-1) moved 67 yards in just two plays on its first drive of the game, capped by a 22-yard pass from Ryan Dunn to Sam Gravitte. The Tigers went up 14-0 when Gravitte scored on a 3-yard run on their second drive.

Wilton (2-2) scored its first touchdown on a 42-yard touchdown run by Mike Burns to get within 14-7 late in the first quarter. Ridgefield’s Will Bonaparte took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, slipping through some Wilton tackles. That was one of the recurring themes of the evening for the Warriors, who frequently contacted Ridgefield runners but couldn’t get them on the ground.

Bonaparte had 145 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns. Gravitte ran for two scores and caught a touchdown pass. Dunn completed 15-of-16 passes for 208 yards and two scores for Ridgefield.

Trailing 21-7 late in the second quarter, Wilton moved to the Ridgefield 27-yard line before stalling. Ridgefield came right down the field, moving 73 yards before Dunn hit John Mullery with a touchdown pass to go up 28-7 at halftime.

“Even if we get a touchdown there and we make it 21-14, we still have to stop them,’’ Cunningham said.

Ridgefield scored on its first drive of the second half and returned an interception for a score in the third quarter.

The hard-running Burns finished with 120 yards on 15 carries and also had Wilton’s second touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors can move the ball but continue to struggle on defense. They have allowed 119 points in four games heading into next Saturday’s game at Brien McMahon at 3:30 p.m.
