The northbound lanes had reopened, but traffic was congested in that direction.
The closure is on I-95 South between Exits 18 and 17, DOT said. A backup of over 5 miles to Exit 21 was reported, DOT said.
original story: WESTPORT, Conn. — Interstate 95 is closed Wednesday evening in Westport after a tanker truck crashed and caught fire, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
The accident happened on I-95 South between Exits 18 and 17, which is where the highway is closed, DOT said.
At about 7 p.m., I-95 was shut down in both directions — northbound and southbound — causing large traffic tie-ups in the area, DOT said.
It was not clear whether any other vehicles were involved in the crash or how the fire started. It was not known whether there were any injuries.
DOT did not say when the southbound side of the highway would reopen, but the northbound side was likely to reopen soon.
