FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Though the sun is shining brightly, Fairfield County residents will have to contend with a combination of heat, humidity, air pollution and pollen on Thursday.

An Air Quality Alert has been issued for Fairfield County by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Ozone within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards, especially for sensitive groups, and increase the likelihood of respiratory symptoms and breathing discomfort in active children and adults with respiratory diseases such as asthma, DEEP warned. The alert is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

In addition, tree pollen levels in Fairfield County are expected to be high on Thursday, according to AccuWeather. Grass pollen, ragweed pollen and mold levels are expected to be low.

Record or near record temperatures are possible on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, especially inland where highs are expected to reach into the 90s in many locations. Closer to the coast, afternoon sea breezes will limit temperatures to the upper 70s or lower 80s, though this is still well above normal for this time of year. The day will be mostly sunny, with 65 percent humidity.

Temperatures will remain warm overnight, falling to lows of around 67. Thursday night will be mostly cloudy.

A cold front will move into the region during the day on Friday, which will bring a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, as well as slightly cooler temperatures. The high on Friday will be near 83. Other than some showers, the day is expected to be mostly sunny.

Temperatures will return to normal or slightly below normal for the weekend as high pressure builds in the region. Saturday will be sunny, with a high near 67, and Saturday night will be partly cloudy with a low around 46. Sunday will be partly sunny, with a high near 68.
