The region is in a drought, about 2 feet short on precipitation in the past year. The conditions led Bridgeport-based Aquarioin Water Co. to ask customers on Tuesday to cut indoor water use by 20 percent.

From Bridgeport to Greenwich, Aquarion’s reservoirs are at 15-60 percent of capacity, the water company said in the statement.

The company has been building temporary pipelines to balance the supply among its reservoirs.

"However, no end to the dry weather pattern is in sight, and state authorities are also seeking major reductions in usage," the statement said.

Conditions could improve slightly when Wednesday's round of moderate to heavy rain moves through the region into the night. This system has the potential to bring 1-2 inches of rain, and perhaps some late-day and evening thunder, the Weather Service said.

Highs will once again be unseasonably warm in the 50s to around 60 across the area.

Dry, breezy and seasonably cool weather returns on sunny Thursday, with a high near 54. The cooling happens overnight, under clear skies, with a 20-point drop in temperature, to 34.

Meanwhile, Wednesday's rain could bring the following amounts:

  • Danbury: 1.17 inches (forecast for northern part of Fairfield County).
  • Bridgeport: 1.06 inches (forecast for coastal part of Fairfield County)

Tuesday brought the following amounts of rainfall:

  • Stamford: 1.85 inches.
  • Norwalk: 1.76 inches.
  • Shelton: 1.74 inches.
  • Sikorsky Airport: 1.69 inches.
  • Darien: 1.48 inches.
  • Fairfield:  1.36 inches.
  • New Canaan: 1.36 inches.
  • Westport: 1.24 inches.
  • Newtown: 1.22 inches.
  • Bethel: 1.17 inches.
  • Danbury Airport: 1.07 inches.
  • Brookfield: 1.03 inches.
