Fairfield County, along with the whole state of Connecticut and much of the metro New York region, is under a Winter Storm Warning starting at midnight and continuing until 6 p.m. Thursday. The forecast calls for 6 to 8 inches of snow along the coast and 8 to 12 inches inland across Fairfield County.
The strong winds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 to 35 mph, combined with the heavy snow will cause hazardous travel conditions with the blowing and drifting snow. Roads will be snow-covered with the quick-falling precipitation, likely causing many delays and cancellations for Thursday morning. Visibility for drivers will be poor, down to a quarter- to a half-mile at times. The temperature will stick at about 30 degrees.
The heaviest snow is expected overnight and into Thursday morning, as the storm tapers off on Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.
Temperatures will begin to drop rapidly after hitting a high of about 52 degrees Wednesday, with snow expected to develop at about 11 p.m. The chance of overnight precipitation is 80 percent, with 2 to 4 inches possible.
The storm will be at its worst Thursday morning, with heavy snow mainly before 2 p.m. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent, with new snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible during the day.
The snow will trail off Thursday Night as temperatures drop to about 12 degrees, with wind chills between zero and 10.
Friday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 24 and chance of light snow after 8 p.m.
There is a 30 percent chance of light snow before 10 a.m. Saturday, which will be cloudy, with a high near 36.
On Sunday, there is a 40 percent chance of snow before noon, then a chance of rain. It will be cloudy, with a high near 39.
