Heavy rainfall of 1 to 2 inches per hour along with isolated thunderstorms was reported in spots early on Memorial Day.

Stamford had reopened Elm Street and South State Street at about 5 a.m.after blocking off the area to traffic while floodwaters were receding.

Doppler Radar indicated more heavy rain storms could occur early Monday, with the additional rain causing minor flooding in urban and poor drainage areas. Excessive runoff could cause flooding of small creeks and streams as well as on low-lying streets and underpasses.

Motorists were reminded to not drive into areas where water covered the roadway: The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross.

The heavy rain had already led many towns and cities to cancel Memorial Day events. Others were waiting until Monday morning to make the call, and some events were still scheduled to take place.

More showers were expected throughout Monday, with possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. The high will be near 77 degrees.

The rain is due to moisture from Tropical Depression Bonnie, which is near the Carolina coast.
