A Winter Storm Warning has been upgraded to a Blizzard Warning for southern Fairfield County. It goes into effect at 2 a.m. Saturday and continues until 7 a.m. Sunday as the storm slams into the Nutmeg State.

Heavy snow of 10 to 15 inches could fall across Coastal Connecticut, with strong and potentially damaging winds. More snow is possible in some areas, the weather service said.

Northeast winds of 20 TO 30 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph are in the forecast, along with temperatures in the 20s, which will keep the precipitation as snow.

Blowing and drifting snow will cause visibility of near zero on Saturday morning and into the evening.

The National Weather Service warns that it will be extremely dangerous to travel due to the heavy snowfall and strong winds. Whiteout conditions are likely, and secondary roads may become impassable.

Strong winds could cause downed tree limbs and power lines, leading to power outages.

Northern Fairfield County will also be slammed by the storm. That area is under a Winter Storm Warning from 2 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.

Heavy snow of 6 to 12 inches is expected to fall, with northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts of up to 35 mph.

Blowing and falling snow will drop visibility to a quarter mile or less at times. Travel will be hazardous.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and from 9 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday during the times of high tides along Long Island Sound.

High tide will be 2 to 3 feet above normal, with isolated flooding on coastal roads and areas.
