Scarecrow Fest To Liven Up Wilton Center For Fall

WILTON, Conn.  – Miss Trudy might not be the most orthodox name for a scarecrow, but, the word “creative” might come to mind when you see her covered with a dozen baby dolls in the Wilton Center this weekend for the second annual Scarecrow Fest.

“You’ve always got a lot of kids all over you,” said Diane Mercer, owner of A Kid’s Place 2, a Wilton day care center. The tall scarecrow is a tribute to innovation as well as a tribute to her line of work.

Miss Trudy will be among 75 scarecrows created for Scarecrow Fest, the town’s way to welcome Halloween.

Residents, business owners and organizations have spent time this week building scarecrows that will hang on light posts in Wilton Center starting Friday.  The town and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce are collaborating on the festive effort. The chamber gave participants the hay and wooden posts. How the scarecrow looks is up to participants.

Janeen Leppert, executive director of the Wilton Chamber, said Scarecrow Fest is a nice way to liven up the main shopping area as well as a chance to get people involved in making Wilton a little more attractive for the fall. “When it’s the fall, people stay inside. But we want people to get out and see the center.”

The scarecrows will also be entered in a contest during the town’s Pumpkin Parade on Oct. 27 with awards in a number of categories. “I think it brings a unique feature to the center,” Leppert said. “It’s fun to see all the different ideas that all the businesses and organizations come up with.”

Mercer and Yanin Gallego, a teacher at A Kid’s Place, are confident Miss Trudy will win. “It’s awesome,” Gallego said.
