Wilton First Selectman Bill Brennan on Monday issued a proclamation declaring today, Sept. 19, as No Texting And Driving Day in Wilton and encouraged residents to support the nationwide "It Can Wait" campaign by taking the pledge to never text and drive.
“We need to help spread the message and educate our community that when it comes to driving, texting can and should wait,” Brennan said.
Led by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon, the "It Can Wait" campaign educates people about the dangers of texting and driving.
Wilton’s declaration coincides with Drive 4 Pledges Day, a nationwide effort aimed at encouraging people to take the “It Can Wait” pledge. About 2,000 Drive 4 Pledges Day activities are planned across the country, according to AT&T.
Tonight, Wilton’s Trackside Teen Center and the Safety Mom are hosting a screening of Werner Herzog's documentary “From One Second to the Next” from 7 to 9. The 35-minute film examines the dangers of texting and driving, and features real people whose lives were changed by a texting-related car accident.
Following the film, a panel discussion will be held. The panelists will include Alison Jacobson, also known as “The Safety Mom,” a national family safety expert, bloggers and spokesperson; Kiersten Aichinger, a victim of a distracted driving accident; Officer Rich Ross, Wilton’s school resource officer; and Chris Gardner of the Wilton Ambulance Corps.
The event is being sponsored by the "It Can Wait" campaign. Free pizza and soda will be provided. Guests will also be able try the “It Can Wait” texting and driving simulator.
