Wilton Shows Off Its Green Side for Earth Day

WILTON, Conn. – Getting the word out about green ideas, healthy living and the environment is important to many residents and organizations, even without the Wilton Go Green Festival.

Even though the event was canceled this year, Wilton will not be without its environmental festivities. And though Earth Day is Sunday, organizations in town are hosting events throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, the Wilton Family Y, Wilton Go Green and the Wilton Alliance for a Healthier Community will join together to hold events celebrating Earth Day. Events will take place from noon to 3 p.m. in different locations around town.

At noon, First Selectman Bill Brennan will open the town's new Wellness Park, located at Kristine Lilly Way and School Road. The park includes a series of stations for warm-up stretches, a kiosk with a map of Wilton’s Pedestrian Zone and a bicycle rack, among other amenities.

After the opening, Trackside Teen Center will host a number of events. Volunteers can work on the Community Vegetable Garden. And Commissioner Daniel Esty of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will give a talk on protecting the environment at the teen center.

“We are extremely proud to have the commissioner of the DEEP be our keynote speaker for our Earth Day festivities,” said Jana Bertkau , president of Wilton Go Green .

On Sunday, the Wilton Library will also hold an environmental talk as historian Eric Rutkow speaks on his new book, "American Canopy." It is about how the use of trees and paper has shaped American culture.

"One serious thought that I hope underlies the Earth Day celebrations of many people around the globe is this: There is an important 'home maintenance job' that we have in preserving our planet's beauty and its environmental hospitality,” said Patrice Gillespie of Clean Air Cool Earth, a nonprofit organization that strives to reduce carbon emissions.
