WILTON, Conn. — Wilton residents with long locks can help make a difference in the lives of women with cancer by donating their hair for wigs.

Next Friday, Wilton is hosting its sixth-annual Pantene Beautiful Lengths hair donation event at Wilton High School in conjunction with Relay for Life.

Created in 2006, the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program is a national initiative that encourages people to grow, cut and donate their healthy hair. The donated hair is then used to create wigs for women who have lost their hair in cancer treatment.

The program is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society, which distributes the wigs for free to cancer patients across the country. Nationwide, Pantene has donated 24,000 wigs to the American Cancer Society since the initiative started, according to the Beautiful Lengths website .

Over the past five years, Wilton has collected more than 60 ponytails to create nine wigs, Wilton event co-chairwoman Jillian Finkelstein said.

The Pantene Beautiful Lengths Wilton donation event is scheduled for May 17 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Wilton High School Stadium. Triloma Spa and Hair Design of Wilton is once again donating its hair-cutting services for the event.

For donation, hair must be at least 8 inches long; clean; dry; free of permanent dyes and chemical treatments; and no more than 5 percent gray. The event is free, and no registration is required.

Anyone interested in donating their hair but is unable to attend the May 17 event can find instructions on how to donate by mail on the Pantene Beautiful Lengths website .
