The awards, presented during the Wilton Community Celebration, are annually given to to individuals, businesses or civic groups that have shown exemplary and longstanding volunteer service to the community, making a positive difference in the quality of life in Wilton.

“We are very pleased to announce our two Distinguished Citizen Award winners, Erin Woolard and the Wilton Education Foundation,” said Bob McDowell, executive director of the Wilton Y. “Both are extremely deserving after demonstrating many years of outstanding volunteer service to our community. We look forward to presenting the awards at the Community Celebration when friends and family can be there to congratulate them.”

The 2013 Wilton Community Celebration is scheduled for Oct. 19 at Rolling Hills Country Club. The event raises funds for the Y’s Community Service Fund, which provides financial assistance to families and individuals who otherwise would not be able to participate in Y programs.

In her more than 25 years in Wilton, Woolard — a wife and mother of two sons — has volunteered her time to a variety of community organizations. When she was a member of the  Community Nursery School of Wilton Board of Directors, she helped create a vegetable garden for the preschoolers.

In 1997, Woolard created the Outdoor Learning Center at Miller-Driscoll School. When her sons entered Wilton High School, she joined the PTSA and became Chairwoman of House and Grounds, a position she created. Through this position, she worked to improve the physical structure of the high school inside and out.

Woolard is a member of St. Matthew’s Church and the Wilton Woman’s Club.

The Wilton Education Foundations is an organization that works to enrich the learning experience for students. The foundation supports ongoing professional development of teachers, the latest in innovative and interactive teaching tools, programming and materials for music and the arts, and “beyond the classroom” experiences that offer children confidence and skills to succeed in college and beyond.

Created more than 20 years ago, the Foundation hosts a variety of activities and fundraiser that raise funds for the schools. One such event is the Get Smart for Wilton 5K race.

Since the first Wilton Community Celebration was held in 1986, over 75 Distinguished Citizen Awards have been given.
