NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A man charged with murdering and sexually assaulting his 55-year-old female roommate in their New Fairfield home has been ruled competent to stand trial, according to the News-Times.

After his arrest May 8, Steven Flood, 32, confessed to raping and killing Susan Guido at their rented home on Candlewood Drive in New Fairfield on May 2, police said.

Flood's attorney J. Patten Brown requested a mental competency exam because Flood had been previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, the News-Times said.

Brown also said Flood would be open to negotiations for a plea bargain, the News-Times said.

Flood has been charged with felony murder, murder committed in the course of sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault in a spousal or cohabiting relationship, third-degree larceny and third-degree criminal trespass, and is held on bond.

Flood and Guido had met while staying in a hotel and agreed to rent a home together to save money, according to his arrest warrant. On May 1, Guido returned home and Flood confronted her angrily about not buying food. They got in a fight about bills and Flood swung at Guido, knocking her to the ground.

He then stomped on her head and sexually assaulted her. He was arrested a few days later after he was found camping in the woods in Union. He told police that he felt guilt and shame over Guido's death and had hoped to buy drugs so he could fatally overdose.
