Yale Issues 'Shelter In Place' Order After Man With Gun Spotted On Campus

Updated at noon: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Yale University issued an alert to its New Haven campus, warning staff and students to shelter in place after a man with a gun was spotted on campus Monday morning, according to its emergency website

A Yale Alert message sent at 11:02 a.m. said, "Confirmed report of person with a gun on/near Old Campus. SHELTER IN PLACE. This is NOT a test." The person was spotted near Old Campus.

There were no reports of injuries, but reports on NBC Connecticut showed heavily armed police officers in tactical gear and carrying assault weapons entering the campus. Police were ordering passersby away from the area. At 11:37 a.m., Yale advised that the shelter in place or lockdown remained in place. Those not on campus were advised to stay away.

At noon, Yale said the shelter-in-place/lockdown continued with teams from Yale Police, New Haven Police and the State Police on the scene and actively searching for any gunman.

The Yale campus is on its November recess for Thanksgiving all this week, according to its online calendar.
