Easton's William 'Bill' Lane Jr., 72, Speechwriter For GE's Jack Welch

EASTON, Conn. — William "Bill" K. Lane Jr., of Easton, speechwriter for General Electric CEO Jack Welch and a Green Beret, died Wednesday May 10. He was 72.

He was the husband of Elizabeth Simmons Lane for 32 years. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 11, 1944, to Virginia Walsh Lane and the late William K. Lane Sr.

Lane was a proud combat veteran, having fought in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive as an officer in the Green Berets.

He worked at General Electric for over 20 years and served as head of corporate communications and as speechwriter for CEO Jack Welch. After retiring from GE, Lane authored two books, "Jacked Up" and "Losing It."

He was a member of Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield for many years and was a parishioner of Notre Dame Church. He was elected as a constable for the town of Easton.

In addition to this wife, he is survived by his children: William K. Lane III, Regan Lane and her fiancé JD, and Thomas Lane, all of Easton; brothers Richard Lane (Joanne) of Hauppauge, N.Y., and Robert Lane of Hicksville, N.Y.; his mother, Virginia Lane of Happauge, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Virginia Lane.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday May 15, at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Church, 655 Morehouse Road, Easton. Entombment will follow in Saint John’s Cemetery in Norwalk, with full military honors.

Arrangements were handled by Lesko and Polke Funeral Home in Fairfield.
