WILTON, Conn. Lawrence "Larry" J. Shortell Sr. of Wilton died Aug. 15 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford. He was 93.
Shortell was born June 5, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Lawrence and Julia Kennedy Shortell. A retired carpenter, he worked for the New York Carpenter's Union and the Connecticut Carpenter's Union.
During his retirement, Shortell worked as a school bus driver in Wilton for several years. He served in the Army during World War II and was a life member of the Norwalk Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Married to Helen Morgan Shortell, he loved his family, life and music. He enjoyed skiing and the outdoors and was a former member of the Conservation Corps.
Shortell is survived by his wife, Helen; two children, Lawrence J. Shortell Jr., of Wilton, and Kathleen Bienapfl, of Portland, Ore.; a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three siblings, James Shortell, Agnes Campos and Margaret Pawloski.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Wilton. Burial with military honors will follow at St. John Cemetery in Norwalk. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Magner Funeral Home in Norwalk.
