NEW YORK - Pioneering publisher Peter Workman, of Wilton and New York City, died Sunday, April 7, at his home in New York, according to a statement on his company’s website . He was 74.

He started Workman Publishing Co. in 1967 as a book packager and built it into a powerhouse that published best-sellers such as "The Silver Palate Cookbook," "1,000 Places To See Before You Die" and "What To Expect When You’re Expecting," which has been on the New York Times bestseller list for 605 weeks, Eater.com reported Monday. Workman also invented the “page-a-day” calendars.

Workman had a knack for finding titles that resonated with popular culture at specific moments in time, with both content and look, Digital Book World reported Monday .
