When a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe was stolen on Tuesday on Midland Avenue in Stamford, Officer Richard Vetter of the Bureau of Criminal Investigations Property Crimes Unit developed information that the suspect was a Stamford juvenile he knew from past incidents, said Stamford Police Lt. Michael A. Noto.
Vetter was also led to a second man, later identified as Alexander Cordero, 18, from Stamford, Noto said.
The next day, Stamford Officer Javon Lake, working on East Main Street observed the suspects enter a building and notified investigating officers. Officers responded to 820 East Main St. located the suspect juvenile and Cordero and placed them under arrest for the theft, Noto said.
During his arrest, Cordero was also found to be in possession of several stolen credit cards, gift cards, EZ pass and a navigation system which were tied to earlier thefts. The stolen vehicle was later recovered on Lipton Place.
The juvenile was charged with larceny and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 11. Cordero was charged with conspiracy at larceny, seven counts of sixth-degree larceny and theft of a credit card. He is being held on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 19.
"The Stamford Police Department is extremely proud of the efforts of Officer Vetter and Officer Lake in this case," said Noto. "This is a great example of investigative personnel and uniformed officers working together to solve a crime and place the accused into custody."
