WILTON, Conn. – A healthy baby boy was welcomed into the world safely Saturday on Route 7 thanks to help from Wilton Police Officer Robert Nosal.
Nosal was on the lookout for speeding cars when he stopped one near Catalpa Road at approximately 12:51 a.m., police said. Before he had time to get out of his patrol car, Nosal was approached by the male driver who said his pregnant wife was inside their car about to give birth, police said. The husband said they were on their way to Norwalk Hospital.
Nosal immediately called for EMS to arrive and followed the husband back to the car. When they got there, the woman was giving birth, Lt. Donald Wakeman said.
The officer helped the man deliver the baby, who was born with the umbilical cord around his neck, Wakeman said. Nosal removed the cord and used a suction bulb from his medical kit to clear fluid from the baby’s nose and mouth, helping him breath, Wakeman said.
When EMS arrived, mother and baby were transported to Norwalk Hospital. As of Monday, both were said to be doing well, Wakeman said.
