WILTON, Conn. – Wilton has gained national recognition as a leader in the energy reform revolution for effectively reducing energy use through a number of initiatives.

The town’s energy-saving efforts are detailed in “Powering Up America: The Revolution Began Yesterday,” a report about energy efficiency and clean- energy adoption at state and local levels throughout the country. The report was presented during a congressional briefing last month in Washington, D.C.

“From 2010 to 2011, the town decreased energy use by 8.8 percent, avoiding $165,048 in energy costs,” the report reads. “Upgrades include modernized lighting systems at the local high school and library and a new ‘smart’ heating and cooling system in Wilton’s community center.”

The report also applauds Wilton’s participation and success in the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge, administered by the state’s Clean Energy Fund. The program, which began in 2010 and ended in July, challenged residents in the 14 participating towns to reduce their home’s energy use by 20 percent. Each town earned rewards based on resident participation.

Through the challenge, Wilton cut $145,777 from residential energy bills, according to the report.

In addition to Wilton, the report features energy-saving practices executed in the Milford Public Schools district. Communities in South Carolina and Pennsylvania are also highlighted in the report.

Commissioned by the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, a New Haven-based organization, the report was presented on July 24 by U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and U.S. Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), co-chairs of the House Energy Savings Performance Caucus.

The full report is available for viewing online . Wilton is featured on page 56 of the report.
