The “catastrophic failure of the truss roof” occurred around 3 a.m. today at the facility off Brookside Place, Durie said.
“It’s a good thing nobody was inside,” the chief said. “The middle of the roof collapsed, and the bay doors were blown out.”
Following protocol, the Bergen County fire coordinator was contacted, as was the Hackensack Fire Department collapse team. Once it was determined no one was inside, the city team was called off.
Utilities were secured and the area cordoned off, Durie said.
Engineers were to determine whether the facility should be repaired or razed.
The collapse was one of several in the area that included the dome at Waldwick Superdome Sports, a Wallington elementary school and a Kohls department store on Route 46.
