NEWTOWN, Conn. — Newtown School Superintendent Joseph Erardi announced his retirement on Wednesday but assured the town he will stay on to help with the transition to a new leader, according to the News-Times.

Erardi, 61, said he decided to retire due to a time-sensitive family health concern, the News-Times said.

Erardi oversaw the opening of the $50 million Sandy Hook School last fall and was named Connecticut’s 2017 Superintendent of the Year.

He joined the Newtown school district in 2014 and helped the district to overcome many challenges after the December 2012 massacre of 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary.

The Newtown Board of Education will discuss Erardi’s retirement at a special meeting Thursday night, the News-Times said.
