Smith has been principal of North Street School since 2008 and has been a part of the Greenwich School District since 1997.

The move will take effect July 1. The search for a new principal at North Street School will begin immediately.

"It has been a tremendous honor to work for the Greenwich Public Schools for the past sixteen years," Smith said in the statement. "Although I am looking forward to the challenges of a new position in a new school system, I will miss the support and friendship of my colleagues here in Greenwich, and I will especially miss my daily interactions with students and parents. I am truly privileged to have been a part of this amazing learning community.”

Smith began his teaching career as a special education teacher in Manhattan in 1981. He taught in Manhattan and Queens until he was named Greenwich's program administrator/coordinator for special education in 1997, according to the statement.

Smith has been recognized for his contributions in the field receiving the Greenwich PTA’s Special Education Services Award in 2002, the Special Education Learning Disabilities Institute Award in 1983, and the Exemplary Service Award, N.Y.C. Board of Education in 1983.

Smith received his bachelor's in psychology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook in 1979; his master's in special education in 1980, his doctorate in reading and learning disabilities in 1984, and his doctorate in educational administration in 1989 from Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City.

“Dr. Smith’s acceptance of the Wilton position is certainly a loss for our District, especially for the students,"  Greenwich Superintendent of Schools William McKersie said in the statement. "It is, however, a great opportunity for Dr. Smith and the Wilton staff and students will benefit from his excellent leadership. We congratulate him on this appointment and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
