Wilton High School Ranks in Top 10 in the State

WILTON, Conn. – It’s official: Wilton High School is one of the top high schools in the state of Connecticut, according to a recent study by U.S. News & World Report magazine.

Wilton was ranked eighth, thanks to the 57 percent participation rate in Advanced Placement courses, high test scores and the readiness of the students for college. Area schools in the Top 10 include Weston High at fourth, Westport's Staples High at fifth and Darien at seventh.

According to the study, 98 percent of the 1,291 students at Wilton High School are proficient in both math and reading, and 51.5 are college ready, meaning that they performed well on Advanced Placement tests.

“I think this is yet another piece of evidence that our kids are doing,” Superintendent Gary Richards said in a report to the Board of Education on Tuesday night.

For Assistant Superintendent Tim Canty , the ranking is nice because he said the rating was created from 2010 information – when he was principal of the high school.

“It makes me feel like we’re doing a good job,” Canty said, pointing out that the rest of the school system is helping students to prepare for high school.

But it’s important to not get too excited about ratings, Richards said, because there are many different types of ratings and they all use different criteria.

“We try not to get too low if we’re not where we’d like to be,” he said. “We also try not to get too excited when we’re at the very top.”

Canty said, “We tend to take these ratings with a grain of salt."
