The receptions are scheduled for Monday, June 2, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Clune Center’s Zellner Gallery, and on Monday, June 9, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Zellner Gallery.

The receptions, sponsored by the Wilton Parent Teacher Association, will feature brief remarks by Smith, followed by a question-and-answer session. Attendees will also have an opportunity to visit informally with Smith.

Smith officially assumes his position in Wilton on July 1. He will succeed Superintendent Gary Richards, who is retiring after 10 years of service to the Wilton Public Schools.

Smith’s appointment was announced by the Board of Education in February after a nationwide search.

All members of the Wilton community are invited to attend the June 2 and June 9 receptions. Light refreshments will be served.

Smith has been the superintendent in Bethel since 2012. Before that, he spent six years as the principal of Bethel Middle School.

From 2003 to 2006, Smith was employed as the principal of Sacred Heart Elementary School in the Bronx, N.Y., where he worked as assistant principal before being promoted. He also has classroom teaching experience at both the elementary and high school levels.

Smith earned a doctorate in educational leadership from Fordham University in 2006. In 2001, he received a master’s degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. and in 1995, a bachelor’s degree from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He lives in Trumbull with his wife, Jennifer, and their five children.
