Wilton Schools Pleased With State Test Scores

WILTON, Conn. – The scores of Wilton Public Schools students on state tests are strong, according to Assistant Superintendent Tim Canty. But there are some areas where the district would like to see improvements.

Canty said he and others at Wilton schools are “generally pleased” with the scores in the Connecticut Mastery Tests (CMT), issued to students in grades three to eight and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT), issued to Wilton High School sophomores. Wilton students overall exceeded state averages in all areas of the test and match up well with grades of similar districts, including New Canaan, Darien, Wesport and Ridgefield. “The scores are quite healthy,” Canty said.

Areas the district took notice of, Canty said, include the third to eighth-grade reading scores and the math and science scores of students in grades five to eight. Canty said the district is also pleased with the Wilton High School performance on the writing and science portions of the CAPT exam.

Canty said the district wants to take a look at the third and fourth-grade math results, as well as the writing marks for all CMT test grades and the CAPT marks for reading and math.

“It’s early in the process,” Canty said. “The instructional leaders have begun the process of conducting a thoughtful analysis. At the end of the day, we will use (the results) as part of our work with the students.”

A more detailed analysis will be done in mid to late fall, Canty said, who also noted that while the test scores are good, they are one measure of how Wilton Schools are educating their students.

“When you’re hitting (state) goal at an 80 to 95 percent level, it’s an indication of the quality of the schools,” he said. “It’s one factor and we take them seriously, but we’re trying to help students grow in academic skill.”
