Wilton Legion Baseball Looks Ahead To Next Season

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton Senior Legion Post 86 baseball team will remember the 2012 season as one of great potential, marred by bad luck.

Post 86 will miss the Legion baseball state playoffs, but is left to wonder what might have been after seven one-run losses this summer. Coming up on the short end of those close games proved to be the difference between a trip to states and staying home.

“You can’t give good teams extra outs. It was a theme this year. It came back and haunted us a lot,” manager Ian Thoesen said. “We have three big players leaving, but we’ll have a good core of guys coming back next year.”

Wilton tried to play spoiler Tuesday evening, trying to keep defending state champion Norwalk from reaching the playoffs as well. Norwalk starting pitcher Mike Parlanti had other thoughts, shutting down Wilton through the first five innings. Wilton rallied in the seventh, but fell short, 6-4.

Wilton had just one hit through the first five innings, and finally got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Post 86 finally started stringing together hits in its last at-bats in the seventh, but it was too late.

Three RBI singles in a row by Andrew Jacobsen, Connor Buhler and Alex Merberg brought the winning run to the plate. But Parlanti escaped, inducing a game-ending flyout to right field.

“Parlanti did his job out there, mixing his pitches. He left our guys guessing,” Thoesen said. “I thought that last hit was going to drop in. We played well, but we got the short end of the stick.”

Wilton Senior Legion (10-16) caps its 2012 season Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Trumbull High School.
