Stay Safe, Westport: Emergency Team Offers Storm Tips, Info

WESTPORT, Conn. — Westport officials released snow emergency information Wednesday afternoon in anticipation of a blustery snowstorm expected to wallop Fairfield County on Thursday.

First Selectman Jim Marpe and the town’s Emergency Management Team encouraged residents to be prepared for the storm, which the National Weather Service is predicting could dump 6 to 12 inches of snow on the area.

Most of Connecticut, including southern Fairfield County is under a Winter Storm Warning from1 a.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday, the NWS said.

Wind gusts could be 40 to 45 mph, with temperatures near 0 degrees. A coastal flood advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.

Heavy snow and blowing snow expected, causing difficult travel conditions.

The town team urged residents to stay off the roads to allow Public Works to clear the streets and to avoid parking on the streets, if possible. Those in flood-prone areas should move vehicles to higher ground before it gets dark tonight.

The team is asking residents to only call 911 in an emergency. All other calls should be made to non-emergency numbers: Westport Police Department, 203-341-6000; Westport Fire Department, 203-341-5000.

The Westport Senior Center, 21 Imperial Ave., will be open as a warming center. The center’s hours are: 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
