WILTON, Conn. -- Shoppers are taking advantage of a one-week break from the sales tax to stock up on back-to-school clothes, said a business owner in Wilton who is enjoying the bump in business.

"It is only 6.35 percent but they do it at such a good time," said Lauren Mulligan, co-owner of Frock & Frill based at 237 Danbury Road, about the state's tax break. "Everybody is starting to get their back-to-school clothes, and it is fall fashion season. People are starting to think about fall and what their fall needs are going to be."

Frock & Frill, which will celebrate its first year in business in September, has seen an increase in sales, Mulligan said. She expects sales to rise as the weekend approaches.

"People are still on vacation, but as they come back they need to buy for the school year and they will do that on the weekend."

Sales-tax free week began Sunday and ends on Saturday. It applies to clothing and shoes of $300 or less per item.

Mulligan co-owns the business with Melissa Thompson. "Our big thing is mother and daughter shopping together," Mulligan said. "We focus on casual everyday wear for women and children, plus gifts and accessories."

"We also look with local artists like Jennifer Angerame,'' she said. Angerame is the owner of Wilton-based Southern Yankee, which offers children clothing for newborns to 6-year-olds.

Mulligan said another local label that they sell is Sherryl Mascarinas' New Canaan-based Lizzie, Izzie + James and its line of vibrant accessories for children.
